Silicon Photonics & PIC Productisation
A working photonic integrated circuit is one step towards a usable product. Foundry access, packaging interfaces, testability, ownership and partner responsibilities must fit together before fabrication is committed.

Who this is for
PIC developers, semiconductor start-ups, corporate R&D teams, photonics investors and product owners.
What the advisory work covers
Platform and partner selection
Compare foundry and PDK options against wavelength, optical loss, active devices, electrical interfaces, design rules, access model and schedule. Translate product needs into supplier questions and acceptance criteria.
Design-to-packaged-product execution
Connect design reviews, fabrication, OSAT or specialist assembly selection, fibre attach, electrical interconnects, thermal management and calibration. Define ownership of interface drawings, test fixtures, software and failure analysis.
Testing and programme governance
Assess wafer-level test, grating versus edge coupling, module validation and prototype-to-product milestones. Flag export-control review needs for the actual technology, destinations, end users and end use; obtain specialist legal classification where required.
Typical consulting use cases
- Create a foundry and packaging partner comparison for a PIC programme.
- Review design-for-test and fibre-coupling choices before tape-out.
- Turn a prototype milestone into a packaged-module acceptance plan.
- Clarify background IP, foreground IP and deliverable ownership in technical partnership scopes.
Scope and evidence
Engagements can range from a focused technical consultation to a scoped written review. A written scope identifies the decision, permitted sources, deliverables and limitations. Private adviser credentials are shared during suitability checks. Access to non-public supplier records or testing is never assumed.
Buyer questions
Are grating couplers always the cheaper option?
No. They can simplify surface access and wafer probing, but insertion loss, polarisation, bandwidth, alignment and package design must be evaluated for the actual process.
Do you replace a PIC design house or packaging supplier?
The advisory scope can help select, brief and assess specialist partners. Design execution or manufacturing commitments require a separately agreed scope.
Can export compliance be guaranteed from a generic PIC description?
No. Classification and licensing depend on the actual item and transaction. Advisory work can identify review points, but does not substitute for legal advice.
